Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a constantly evolving martial art with hundreds of attacks, defenses and positions. But the beauty of the art is also in its simplicity. Powerful submissions like the cross-choke exploit weaknesses in human physiology and can be utilized by anyone, from Roger Gracie at the Worlds to Victor’s little girl, Kayla.

Back from Rio with 2 Silvers, 4 Bronzes
The team traveled to Rio de Janeiro to compete in the World Masters/Seniors Championships, one of the most competitive tournaments in the world. The team proudly brought home two silvers and 4 bronzes. Congratulations to everyone who made this happen! Without our training partners there to push us, none of this would have been possible. We look forward to returning next year and doing even better.
Stay tuned for a photo gallery from our trip.

Technique: The Can Opener
Victor shows an effective way to open up your opponent when he’s turtled up and you’re having trouble getting your second hook established to take his back. Once you’ve established your second hook and take his back, then it’s time to submit with a collar choke! Check out the video here on youtube.

Technique: Standing Pass
Against opponents with a strong closed guard, it is often wise to attempt a stand-up pass. Victor shows a great stand-up guard pass by controlling his opponent’s sleeve, standing up with proper posture and passing into side control.
- Step 1: Victor sets up correct posture in Raphael’s guard.
- Step 2: Victor begins to stand. He’s controlling Raphael’s right sleeve so Victor begins to stand with his left leg.
- Step 3: Victor stands up in Raphael’s guard using proper posture
- Step 4: Victor switches sleeve control from left hand to right, saves his elbow and begins to make pressure downward on Raphael’s right leg.
- Sure that his right elbow is safe, Victor uses his left hand to reach back and open the guard
- Step 6: Victor controls his opponent’s leg
- Step 7: Victor passes while still controlling the sleeve.
